Event Highlights
The Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project – now named Quw'utsun Valley Hospital / Quw'utsun Hulitun-ew't-hw is setting a new benchmark for zero carbon healthcare in Canada. Certified under the CAGBC Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard and targeting LEED v4 BD+C Healthcare Gold, the project demonstrates how British Columbia’s first fully electric hospital can reduce operational and embodied carbon, while supporting climate resilience, ecological restoration, and community health.
The Quw'utsun Valley Hospital / Quw'utsun Hulitun-ew't-hw, is being delivered by the Nuts'a'maat Alliance, which includes: The Province of BC via Island Health (owner), EllisDon, Parkin Architects, BC Infrastructure Benefits and Infrastructure BC.
Presented by ZGF Architects and HH Angus, this session will examine the strategies, tools, and decision-making processes that enabled the project to achieve ZCB Design certification while meeting the complex functional, resilience, and operational requirements of a modern hospital. Topics will include the Alliance delivery model, embodied carbon Key Performance Indicators, optimized building systems, photovoltaics, and low-GWP mechanical strategies, and the relationship between ZCB and LEED certification pathways.
The session will also highlight the project’s broader regenerative landscape approach, with a focus on water management strategies that contributed to Salmon-Safe certification. In addition, the webinar will explore how meaningful Indigenous engagement informed the design process.
Attendees will gain transferable lessons for applying zero carbon and regenerative design strategies to healthcare and other complex building typologies.
