Event Highlights
This CAGBC webinar is the first installment in a series featuring our 2026 Green Building Award Winners. Join us on August 11 to hear the story behind the 2026 New Construction Award-winning project, temesewtxw Aquatic and Community Centre — Canada's first completed Zero Carbon Building – Design certified aquatic centre, designed by hcma architecture + design.
In this session, Ali Kenyon and Rebecca Holt of hcma architecture + design will share how the project challenges conventional approaches to recreation facility design. Drawing on lessons learned from delivering an all-electric aquatic and community centre, they will discuss new imperatives for community recreation facilities and the importance of holistic, intergenerational thinking in addressing society's increasingly complex and evolving needs.
Learn how this award-winning project is redefining community infrastructure by advancing ambitious climate goals, supporting community wellbeing, and creating lasting social value.
About the Winning Project
The New Construction Award is presented to the team responsible for a new commercial or institutional building that demonstrates optimal environmental sustainability and occupant health and wellness. Canadian new construction projects registered for, or certified by, a recognized green building standard or rating system are eligible. This award focuses on the design stage and the choices made to achieve environmental sustainability goals as well as improve occupant health and wellness.
This year's winning project, temesewtxw Aquatic and Community Centre is an all-electric facility designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 92% compared to the facility it replaces, while eliminating on-site fossil fuel combustion. In addition to the ZCB Design certification, this project is also pursuing LEED v4 Gold certification.
Serving as a new civic heart for the community of New Westminster, the centre transforms a complex recreation program into a landmark community destination. The project sets a bold vision for how public buildings can help heal the land, advance climate action goals, foster social connection, and create long-term value for the communities they serve.
