Achieving Net Zero with Energy as a Service

DURATION: 1.25 hours
Innovative technology and financing solutions are needed to support asset owners and managers as they accelerate the transition of building portfolios to net zero. The extra cost of technology for a net zero project still presents a challenge to the business case. The lifecycle-costs business case can often justify the extra up-front costs over the long term, but in many cases it is still not enough to make the project feasible.

Utilizing an Energy as a Service (EaaS) model, these technologies can be delivered, but eliminated from up-front costs while keeping lifecycle costs neutral over the long term.

Presented by Ameresco Canada, this session explores how the EaaS model can help bridge the financing gap to achieve a net zero building and:

- Integrate advanced renewable technologies
- Stabilize lifecycle costs
- Off load performance risk

A case study on how this model helped fund Canada's first operationally carbon neutral school will also be presented.

Moderator:

- Steven Costa - Director of Advanced Technology & Asset Development, Ameresco Canada

Panelists:

- John Kononiuk - Retired Executive Manager of Facilities, London District Catholic School Board
- Jim Sheffield - Principal, Nicholson Sheffield Architects
- Joseph Meyer - Business Development Manager, Ameresco Canada

Addressing IAQ Issues for Safe Re-Occupancy

DURATION: 1.25 hours
Buildings across Canada are entering varying stages of re-occupancy. Owners and managers are undertaking frequent air quality testing while implementing revised recommendations around ventilation, humidity and filter upgrades to ensure a safe environment for return to work. This has created a new opportunity of practice to improve human health in indoor environments, but to adequately address IAQ problems means dealing with contaminants at their source.

This recorded presentation and panel discussion explores technology to reduce VOCs, particulates, micro-organisms, and air-borne and surface pathogens that is not disruptive to your ventilation flow or energy bills. Supported by global and domestic case studies, the presenters share the challenges occupants were facing and the combined strategies they implemented to reach optimized indoor air quality.

Panelists:

- Byron Bartlett, Vice President, Aerus Canada

- Henrique Cury, President, Activepure Brazil

- Fraser Fry, Regional Manager Biomedical Engineering & Medical Device Reprocessing, Eastern Health, St. John's NL

This is a recording of a live webinar held on June 16, 2021. The live webinar was sponsored by Aerus, with PCL Construction contributing as a supporting sponsor.

Calculating the Zero Carbon Balance: An Overview

DURATION: .75 hours

1 GBCI general education hour.

Eliminating a building's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the use of renewable energy sources and carbon offsets can demonstrate a building's dedication to tackling Canada's climate reduction goals. A zero carbon balance is achieved when the building's avoided emissions from exported green power and carbon offsets exceed the sum of their operational and embodied carbon. Using renewable energy to reduce operational carbon can ultimately help a building save on energy use while investing in, and increasing the value, of renewable energy sources.

This course will consider what goes into calculating a zero carbon balance, including exploring how gases are converted to CO2 equivalents and identifying the differences between direct and indirect emissions. Participants will also discover the impact of embodied carbon on a zero carbon balance, as well as how alternative energy sources can be included in this calculation.

This course is delivered by Kalum Galle of Morrison Hershfield.

Concrete and Embodied Carbon for Zero Carbon Buildings

DURATION: 1 hour
Concrete is the most widely used building material in the world. Manufacturing cement for concrete accounts for roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. As more construction projects start managing embodied carbon, the emissions impact of this critical material is becoming increasingly apparent. Strategies exist to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete including tweaks to mix design like maximizing supplementary cementing materials, using Portland-limestone cement, and altering early-strength requirements / curing time. Advancements in concrete manufacturing are also showing promising results to tackle GHG emissions, from direct injection of CO2 to new CO2-made aggregates, among others.

This course will provide an overview of the key topics related to the embodied carbon of concrete as it relates to low-carbon buildings. Topics include life cycle emissions of concrete; overview of various applications and considerations of concrete in buildings; environmental product declarations (EPDs); calculation tools and methodologies; innovations in low-carbon concrete technologies; and related case studies. After this course, participants will be better equipped to describe the life cycle embodied carbon emissions of concrete and propose and implement reduction strategies for construction projects.

This course is delivered by Ryan Zizzo of Mantle Developments. .

Embodied Carbon: An Introduction

DURATION: .75 hour

1 GBCI general education hour.

The true environmental footprint of a building begins at the moment of extraction of raw materials. Embodied carbon considers the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the supply chain all the way through decommissioning of a building. For those truly interested in corporate social responsibility and minimizing their building's/project's impact on the environment, it's important to consider the embodied carbon that is linked to their building.

This course will describe and identify the importance of embodied carbon and its link to the more commonly used term of "life-cycle assessment" (LCA). Reduction strategies will be explored, as well as different LCA software tools that can be used in calculating embodied carbon. The course will go a step further by considering how renovations of existing buildings can be addressed.
